Gitter communities and rooms

Follow

Since August 2016, the structure of Gitter Rooms and Communities have changed considerably as we've started to allow for the creation of communities and rooms that aren't directly related to objects in GitHub

When creating a new community, you can choose to link the community to an organisation or repository on GitHub. If you link the community to an organisation, this means that all members of the organisation on GitHub will be admins of your community. You can then easily create any room in the community, or create rooms that are integrated with repositories owned by that organisation. This will allow features such as the activity feed in the room to automatically receive webhooks of activity in the repository on GitHub and link issues in the room to issues on GitHub.

Is there any way to make an organization-level chat room public?

    Hi Helder,

Not at the moment, you'll need to create a public room, either based off a public repo or you can create a public channel e.g. yourorg/chat

Also if you visit https://gitter.im/home we will generally suggest some based on repos you've starred/watched etc...

Although I have an organization in github, glitter is not recognizing it so I am not able to create a private chat for that organization... Any ideas on what I ca do?

@brunoaguiar it could be a few things.
    1. Your organisation has enabled this (https://github.com/blog/1941-organization-approved-applications). Do you see your org listed in the left menu under the Organisations section?
    2. As part of our free plan, you get one private chat room for free, this is your Organisation room. If you want to create additional private rooms, you will need to upgrade at billing.gitter.im

Best to contact support@gitter.im if you're still having trouble.

Same question here, how do I delete a room?

You currently can't delete or rooms in the UI, it is a feature we will make available in the future.

If you need a room deleted, feel free to contact support@gitter.im and we can do it for you provided we are able to validate you are the owner or admin of the room or org.

we are testing gitter as official user group chat, and would like to use organization chat room for it. Does it have any member count limitation on the free plan?

I am only allowed to create channels with myself as the owner, not the organization. I have not restrictions on third party access and the organization shows up under "your organization".

@Benedicte you need to create the organisation room first before you can create channels underneath it.

I did nothing, but going back in to test your suggestion and it now works. I had made the room as you suggested already.
