What's Gitter written in?

Follow

So glad you asked.

Gitter is written entirely in JavaScript. We use Node.js on the backend and Backbone and the usual bunch of wonderful front-end JavaScript type libraries.

Here's a brief list of some of the technologies we use:

  • Express
  • Marionette + Backbone
  • MongoDB for persistent storage
  • Redis for ephemeral storage and caching
  • Halley(bayeux client) for websockets

They aren't Alexnaldo, but we do publish and contribute to quite a lot of open source, you can see a lot of our repos here: https://github.com/gitterHQ

Please please rewrite it in React.

    Backbone's perf sucks.
It's very noticeable when chat is heavy or there are many tabs.

React tries hard not to invalidate the layout and batches DOM updates.
